He’s head chore assistant to all of us.…..from gathering eggs and retrieving the chickens (the kids invariably let some out) to gathering, sorting and moving the horned Dexter cattle with me. He’s a natural herding dog that will find a way to get “not so co-operative” new mother cows to move with their calves for me.
Predator control chief….. keeps the coyotes at bay day and night, let’s the Redtail Hawks overhead know they’re not welcome to the Silkies & ducks, catches more mice than a lifetime of cats have, convinced the skunks to move out, and since we’ve had no more problems with Bobcats and Owls taking the chickens he gets credit for monitoring their presence too..
Deer Control….. we no longer have deer sleeping in our yard and eating our fruit trees! They’re allowed to walk about 10’ outside the fence line on their way through and aren’t chased, but they know the boundary the ES have set!
Wild Turkey alert…. The new flock of turkeys that cross our property 2-3 times daily are announced, not chased, and respect the yard’s boundary also.
He doesn’t bother the cows, horses & birds when unattended and is trusted to guard and patrol Day & night. (Terrific “off” switch) He plays with the kids, lounges on the porch or comes inside to lay by our feet and just hang out.
“Boss” travels well in our Motor Home, (if you asked I’m sure he’d tell you it’s His Motorhome!) He keeps us company, helps load/unload the cattle we take with us in the trailer and provides a true sense of security to me traveling cross country with the kids and cows.
His intelligence and love are visible through his wizened, soul bonding eyes. His willingness and desire to be with us show how much we mean to him…..…..and it’s a mutual affection
