We raise Irish Dexter (horned) cattle on 140 acres in Central Oregon. There are 7 full time kids from 7-17, my husband & I and a full menagarie of livestock & fowl! We also have a spayed female "Pawpy" 3/4 ES & 1/4 Rough Collie.
We're an active group and the dogs are dedicated to all, assisting each at chore times, from herding/sorting the cows to checking out the nest boxes for eggs.
The dogs have given the wildlife a perimeter to respect and yet leave them alone and don't chase outside the yard boundaries. Even the Red Tailed Hawks are given a bark if they fly over the house/yard to low!
Our ES don't harass the livestock to entertain themselves, they just know how to help when the need arises. They're eager to please and love to have our attention.
Strangers are announced & accepted when we allow.
The ones that put the errant stray back in the fence and guards the gate for you.
They faithfully wait for you to come for the next chore and don’t have to “work the stock” to stay occupied.
These dogs are “Thinkers” and will figure things out by watching you, they seem to understand English, are deeply devoted to their owners and will do all they can to help you out.
Companionship is a large part of their livelihood and they shouldn’t be expected to stay alone or inactive for hours at a time!
ES Primarily herd by driving, these are not generally gathering dogs.
They bond to both family and livestock and are used for the protection of BOTH.
They should NOT show over-aggression to visitors, or be overly friendly. They should be aware, alert you and then be accepting of strangers when you give them direction to accept.
The ES is known to be treeing, sight &/or scent or hunters, they often show an instinct to track game. Our ES hunting is primarily eradicating mice. (better than any cats we’ve ever owned!)
Our English Shepherds live and work with us and our Registered Dexter (Horned) Cattle on 140 acres in Antelope, located on the fringes of the High Desert, in Central Oregon.
We have an "Old McDonald's Farm" assortment of critters, fowl and a "Passel of kids", a very active working farm, family and dog world!

The English Shepherd is the old fashioned “ALL-AROUND FARM DOG”
This is the dog that went to the "back 40" and brought the milk cows in on his own twice a day.
The dogs that put the errant stray back in the fence and then guards the gate for you.
They faithfully wait for you to come for the next chore, more than likely napping on the porch or at your feet, and don’t have to “work the stock” to stay occupied.

Our own ES hunting skills are shown in primarily eradicating mice. (better than any cats we’ve ever owned!) and playing “Hide & Seek” with the kids.
What really matters in choosing a dog is what is inside him…. the genetic heritage present at birth.
Raise them right, expose them to as much as you can and if you set and enforce the rules you’ll have your hearts lifelong partner & a loyal helpmate.
